Highgate is a suburb district found under Birmingham, England. After the inauguration of Big City Plan in 2008, the district was moved to be part of Birmingham Town’s center. The district is famously known as the original place where the Anglo-Saxons settled and thus, named the district ‘ Highgate’.
Highgate has a lot of landmark buildings. Its undisputed landmark is the Central Mosque of Birmingham. The district is also home to lots of shopping centres and residential homes constructed using modern style. The district also houses several old buildings, some of which include : Church of St. Alban, Stratford House. It is also home to huge houses built using Victorian style, especially those found opposite the Park of Highgate.
Highgate also serves as home to Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College and Birmingham Sports Centre. However, Joseph Chamberlin College is currently undergoing construction while Birmingham ‘s sports centre has been mapped out for demolition.
A huge part of Highgate district was constructed after 1850. Thus, in the early 20th century, the District had a population of roughly 15,000. However, presently, the district is currently made up of different foreigners due to the high rate of immigration in the 20th century. Before the 1970s, Highgate had thousands of residents of Bangladeshi origin as many wanted cheaper districts. However, after the redevelopment of the 1970s, most of them desired to move out.
When the district wanted to name its streets, it chose the name of the Vaughton family. This is because the family was quite wealthy. The Dymoke street was culled from Robert Vaughton ‘s wife. A street was also named after their daughter-in-law, Emily. Vaughton street was constructed in the 1860s though it was demolished in 1938 after the houses deteriorated.
Highgate is also home to the famous Highgate Park, which though, was to be used for charitable purposes, have been converted to Park for all and sundry.
The district also has over four primary schools.
