Bordesley Green is a district found in Birmingham, England. It is located in the innermost part of the town and approximately, two miles off the eastern axis of Birmingham’s town centre. The district’s neighboring villages are Yardley, Small Heath, Alum Rock and Saltley. The district also has a village attached to it, which is called ‘Bordesley village’.
Bordesley derived its name from an old area in the pasture of demesne. The earliest mention of Bordesley was in records that were traced to 1285.
The district started witnessing development in 1834, as it took off from the Carrell road, through the lane leading to Garrison and extended to Blake lane. The eastern part of the district started its development in 1906. The eastern axis, thus boasted of several infrastructures such as the police station, fire station and tarring of the roads.
Few years after the Boer war ended, most of the roads in the area were constructed. Thus, in order to commemorate several soldiers of Birmingham origin who lost their lives while the war lasted, the roads were named after them. They include : Pretoria road, Churchill Road amongst others.
Immediately twentieth century began, the district made a name for itself as it was known for its manufacturing and industrial sector. It was in Bordesley that the famous Woodley Tool and Motor company was headquartered. Bordesley district also housed one of National Telephone Company ‘s depot centers which was quite instrumental in the emergence of Colossus computers.
Presently, the district is still rife with development as it has the renowned Heartland Hospital, Kingfisher Country Park, shopping plaza and several estates, all aimed at improving the lives of its residents.
According to the 2001 census count, the district has 31,343 residents though it slightly increased to 33,937 in 2011′ s census. Females account for 51.2% of the district’s population.
As regards Education, Bordesley is home to three primary schools, two secondary schools and one campus for Birmingham’s South and City college.
