Nechells is a suburb district found under Birmingham. It is located in the Central axis of Birmingham. The district forms part of Ladywood ‘s ward. The ward’s local government includes districts that were formerly not part of Nechells but are now known as Bloomsbury, Duddeston and North Nechells.

The earliest mention of the district was in 1180 when it was referred to as Echeles. In 1290 and 1322, the district was called ‘Le Echeles’  and ‘Le Necheles’ respectively. The district’s name initially  referred to the intersection of Nechells place, Rocky Lane, and Bloomsbury Street. The intersection forms a triangle, from where Nechells derived its name.

In the 19th century, following the mass emigration of Irish residents, the district became over–populated. It was in this era that the district was home to several factories and homes. Development within that  period also included establishment of St. Clements Church (1859) Cemetery for Roman Catholics (1850) amongst other several landmarks.

After the second World War ended, there was an influx of immigrants. Majority of the immigrants came from India and the Caribbean. However, in the 1950s, the majority of the houses in the district were slim, thus not fit for a person to live in. In the 1960s,  the district had a new outlook after redevelopment works. However, in the 1990s, most of those structures were demolished to enable construction of low private houses.

Nechells was also known for its industries as it had two power stations, gas stations amongst other factors that propelled the district ‘s development.

According to the 2001 census count, the district had 33,957 residents. Its population density was pegged at 3,400 persons within km². As regards Education, the district has two primary schools and two secondary schools (Heartlands Academy and Nechells Secondary Modern school). The major means of transportation in the district is through road and railway.
