Newtown, otherwise known as Aston New Town is a district found in Birmingham. It is located in the inner axis of the town, which is northward of Birmingham’s town center.
On its Western border, it has Hockley and its flyover. Its north-western border has Lozells while Aston is located on its north-eastern border. A34 Road is the precise location of Newtown. Thus, the district passes through Birmingham’s town centre and extends towards the north western region, into Walsall before exiting through A4540 Road.
In the late 18th century, the urban region of Birmingham was crossing over to Aston in the district referred to as Newtown Middleway. The district’s eastern region was bounded by Walmer Lane. On the western side of the district, a new road was established and named New Town Row. The district thus took its name from the road.
In 1844, on the Newtown row axis, St. Stephen was constructed. Being the first development in the area, the street beside it took the name of the church. The church’s designer was RC Carpenter, a renowned architect. The church was rebuilt in the late 19th century. However, in the mid 20th century, the building was demolished.
In the late 19th century, New Town alongside other districts formed part of Birmingham. The district alongside neighbouring Aston turned to a one way shopping centre. It continued like this till 1970 when through redevelopment, the shopping centre was moved to a new area, between High Street and Alma Street. Through further development of the road, the district was divided into two.
The standard of houses in the district declined form the Victorian era till mid 20th century when a documentary was released about the district and it led to its development. Presently, the district is made up of over 10 tower blocks. As regards Politics, Newtown ward has a representative : Ziaul Islam (Labour).
