PDS Painting Birmingham does painting and decorating in Erdington, covering homes, lets and businesses in the B23 and B24 postcodes. Erdington is in north-east Birmingham, and it’s well inside the patch our Birmingham painters and decorators cover across the city.
Most jobs here fall into three groups: Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas near the village centre, rented houses and converted flats, and shops and units along the High Street and around Tyburn. Each brings its own preparation, timings and access questions.

Decorating Victorian and Edwardian Houses Around Erdington Village and Gravelly Hill
The streets either side of Erdington High Street, and those running down towards Gravelly Hill, hold many late-Victorian and Edwardian houses. Their tall hallways, long staircases and original timber joinery set the pace of the job, and a stairwell that drops two floors needs staging rather than a ladder - routine in our work painting hallways, stairs and high ceilings.
Older ceilings and walls here often show fine hairline cracks. We rake out and fill them, then hang lining paper where a ceiling is too crazed to paint well, though loose or blown plaster needs a plasterer before we can start.
Picture rails, ceiling roses and deep skirtings all take time to cut in neatly. Plenty of these houses were split into flats over the years, so shared hallways and landings are common as well.
Timber Bay Windows, Sashes and Front Doors
Keeping the original bays and panelled doors on an Erdington terrace sound is what our timber bay window and front door painting is for. We rake out failed putty and flaking paint, treat and prime bare timber, seal knots, fill and sand, then finish with undercoat and topcoat.
Bottom rails and sills fail first because rain sits on them longest, so they get the most attention.
Rented Houses, Flats and Shared Homes Between Tenancies
Getting an Erdington let ready between one tenant leaving and the next moving in is the focus of our end of tenancy and landlord painting service. Landlords usually want neutral, hard-wearing colours that are easy to touch up next time round.
Water marks from old leaks and nicotine on ceilings bleed through emulsion unless they’re sealed first, which is why we always stain block before repainting those patches.
In converted houses, the communal stairs and landings are often the most worn part of the building. We work to your check-in date, can arrange to collect keys from your letting agent, and agree access with the managing agent where hallways are shared.
Family Homes in Pype Hayes, Short Heath and Stockland Green
Further from the centre, around Pype Hayes, Short Heath and Stockland Green, much of the housing is interwar and post-war family homes. The usual request is a full redecoration after a move, room by room.
Outside, many fronts are finished in render or pebbledash that has faded or started to flake. Repainting those outside walls, render and woodwork means cleaning, stabilising and two coats of masonry paint, done in dry weather.
On homes near Pype Hayes Park or Rookery Park, we’d normally do fascias, soffits, back doors and garden-facing woodwork in the same visit, which saves putting access up twice.
Shops on Erdington High Street and Business Units Around Tyburn
High Street shopfronts, cafes and offices are covered by our commercial painting for shops and offices, with work done early in the morning, in the evening or in phases so trading carries on. Further out, we also redecorate offices and units around Tyburn and the Fort Dunlop side of B24.
When we finish Erdington jobs, their photos will be added here, and in the meantime there are more finished jobs from around Birmingham on our work page.

What Affects the Cost of Decorating in Erdington?
In Erdington, the biggest variables are the height of Victorian hallways and stairwells, how much filling and lining older walls need, whether a rental is empty or still furnished, and how many communal areas a converted house has. Each is priced once we’ve seen it, and the quote is fixed in writing. For a broader view, see what painting and decorating costs in Birmingham.

Erdington Painting and Decorating Questions
Do you cover Gravelly Hill, Stockland Green and Castle Vale?
Yes. Gravelly Hill and Stockland Green are both in B23, and Castle Vale in B35 is on our list too. The coverage section on this page sets out each Erdington neighbourhood by postcode, and if your street isn't named, a quick call will tell you.
Can you get a rental property in Erdington ready before the next tenant moves in?
Yes. It's quickest when the property is empty and access is arranged in advance, whether keys come from you or your agent. We block stains, then use hard-wearing finishes in one neutral colour. Start and finish dates are agreed when we quote. Our end of tenancy painting page has more detail.
Do you paint communal hallways and stairs in converted houses?
Yes. Shared stairwells are painted from proper access equipment, and we keep a safe route through for residents while the work goes on. Access, timings and wet-paint notices are agreed beforehand with the freeholder or managing agent, so everyone in the building knows what's happening.
Can you repaint the original timber bay windows on my terrace?
Yes. Failed paint and loose putty come out, bare timber is primed and the bay is built back up with undercoat and topcoat. Late spring to early autumn is the best window for it, when the wood is dry. See our timber window and door painting page for the full method.
Can you decorate a shop on Erdington High Street outside opening hours?
Yes. We can start early, work into the evening or split the shop into sections, agreed with you in advance, so you keep serving customers. More on how we plan this is on our commercial painting page.
Are your Erdington painters DBS-checked and insured?
Yes. All our painters are DBS-checked, which matters to tenants and residents in occupied homes, and the business is insured for the work it carries out. Ask at the visit if you'd like to see the paperwork.
