PDS Painting Birmingham offers painting and decorating in Sutton Coldfield, the Royal Town that has been part of Birmingham since 1974. Being inside the city boundary means Sutton gets what you’d expect from a painter and decorator across Birmingham: DBS-checked painters, a visit before any price and a quote in writing.

Three kinds of property shape the work here. There are the Victorian and Edwardian villas of Four Oaks and the older streets near the town centre, the family homes of Boldmere, Walmley and Mere Green, and the shops and offices that need decorating without closing their doors.

Painting Period Homes in Four Oaks and Around the Town

Much of Sutton Coldfield’s older housing has the features that make decorating slower and more skilled, and nowhere more than on the Four Oaks Estate, where many of the large houses are late Victorian or Edwardian. Tall ceilings and stairwells that climb two or more floors need towers or staging, not a stepladder, and we plan that access before we quote for any interior painting and decorating.

Original joinery is the other big time cost. Deep skirtings, panelled doors and architraves all need careful preparation, and sashes have to be painted so they still slide afterwards - our page on timber sash window and door painting explains how.

Ornate plaster cornices are common in these rooms too. We paint existing cornices with care, and where plain coving is missing or damaged we can fit new lengths through our coving installation service.

Walls in the oldest houses may be lime plaster, which needs a breathable paint rather than a modern vinyl emulsion, so we check what’s underneath before choosing products. Repairs to the plaster itself are a plasterer’s job, not ours.

Conservation Areas: Four Oaks, Anchorage Road and High Street

Birmingham City Council lists three conservation areas in Sutton Coldfield: Four Oaks, Anchorage Road and High Street. Conservation areas can carry extra controls on changes to the front of a house, and listed buildings need consent for many alterations.

Redecorating like for like - the same colour on the same surfaces - is routine. If your home is listed, or sits in the High Street conservation area, and you’re planning a different colour on the front, check with Birmingham City Council’s planning team before booking the work. We can point you in the right direction, but treat this as a pointer rather than planning advice.

Family Homes in Boldmere, Wylde Green, Walmley and Mere Green

Beyond the period streets, a lot of Sutton Coldfield is family housing, from older semis around Boldmere and Wylde Green to the newer estates in Walmley and towards Mere Green. These jobs usually begin with a whole-house interior redecoration after a move, or a front elevation that’s overdue for repainting.

Outside, that means masonry, fascias, soffits and timber woodwork, all handled through our exterior house painting service.

For back gardens, we offer fence and decking painting and staining, ideally booked for late spring or summer once the timber has had a chance to dry out.

Exterior Painting and Garden Woodwork

Exterior work in Sutton Coldfield covers rendered and painted brick walls, fascias and soffits, timber windows and doors, and garden timber. Homes near Sutton Park, or under mature trees, tend to collect more algae and moss on render and fences, so cleaning and treating comes before any paint.

Render has to be sound, clean and dry before it’s coated, and the right product depends on what’s already on the wall. Our guide to masonry and render painting compares the coatings and the preparation each one needs.

We book outdoor work into settled dry spells that are warm enough for the coating to cure, so most of it happens between spring and early autumn. If you’re weighing up finishes for the garden, read our guide on choosing paint, stain or oil for fences and decking.

Shops, Offices and Hospitality in the Town Centre and Mere Green

Town-centre shops, offices, cafes and restaurants, along with businesses around Mere Green, rarely want to close for a redecoration. We work early, late or in phases so you keep trading, and our commercial painting and decorating page covers how that’s planned.

Photos of finished Sutton Coldfield jobs will appear below as they’re completed. Until then, you can see more of our work across Birmingham.

Which Parts of Sutton Coldfield Do We Cover?

We work in the Birmingham parts of all five Sutton Coldfield postcode districts:

  • B72 - the town centre, Maney and part of Wylde Green
  • B73 - Boldmere, Wylde Green and New Oscott
  • B74 - Four Oaks and the Birmingham side of Mere Green
  • B75 - Mere Green, Roughley, Falcon Lodge and Moor Hall
  • B76 - Walmley

B74 and B76 both stretch beyond the Birmingham boundary, so if you live towards the outer edge of either district, phone us and we’ll check your street.

Just to the south, we also work as a painter and decorator in Erdington.

For everywhere else in the city, see all the areas we cover.

How Much Does Painting and Decorating Cost in Sutton Coldfield?

A few things weigh more heavily on Sutton Coldfield quotes. Period rooms are bigger and taller, so there’s more wall and ceiling to cover and more access equipment to set up. Detailed woodwork, sash windows and cornices all add preparation time, and a tall exterior may need scaffold rather than ladders. We fix every price in writing after the visit, and for what drives costs city-wide, see our Birmingham painter and decorator price guide.

Sutton Coldfield Painting Questions

Do you cover Four Oaks, Mere Green and Walmley?

Yes. Four Oaks and Mere Green sit in B74 and B75, Walmley is in B76, and we cover the Birmingham streets in all three. Because B74 and B76 also take in some addresses beyond the city boundary, check the postcode list on this page or ring us on 0121 752 9229 if you're not sure about yours.

Do I need permission to repaint the outside of my house in a conservation area?

Repainting like for like is usually treated as routine maintenance. Listed buildings, and fronts in the High Street conservation area, can be different, particularly if you want a new colour. Check with Birmingham City Council's planning team before the work is booked. We're happy to talk it through at the visit, but this isn't legal or planning advice.

Can you paint high ceilings and stairwells in period homes?

Yes. Tall rooms and stairwells that rise through two or three floors are painted from towers, staging or proper stair platforms, set up so the stairs stay safe to use. Older plaster and joinery get extra preparation first: cracks raked out and filled, old gloss keyed and any bare timber primed before the finish coats.

Do you paint and stain fences and decking?

Yes, both. Timber needs to be clean and dry, so late spring and summer are the best times, with a few dry days either side of the job. We'll recommend paint, stain or oil depending on the wood and how it's been treated before. See our fence and decking painting and staining page for more.

How long does it take to paint a 3-bedroom house in Sutton Coldfield?

It depends on how many rooms, ceilings and woodwork are included and how much preparation the walls need. A period house in Four Oaks with tall rooms and lots of joinery will take longer than a newer house of the same size. We give you a timescale with the quote, and our guide on how long it takes to paint a room or a house explains what affects it.

Are the painters who work in Sutton Coldfield DBS-checked and insured?

Yes. Every painter who works in your Sutton Coldfield home is DBS-checked, and the business carries insurance for the work we do. If you'd like to see the details before we start, just ask when we come round to quote.
