Is Your Great Barr Address in Birmingham, Sandwell or Walsall?

Great Barr is split between three councils - Birmingham City Council, Sandwell and Walsall - and we work on the Birmingham side only. The quickest check is to look at who sends your council tax bill, or enter your postcode into the GOV.UK find your local council service.

Postcodes don’t follow the council boundary, so an address in B43 could be in any of the three boroughs. Broadly, the Birmingham side runs from Perry Barr and Perry Hall Park up through Kingstanding and Oscott towards Queslett, while Hamstead is in Sandwell and Pheasey is in Walsall.

Semi-Detached Homes Around Perry Hall Park

On the Birmingham side of B42, around Perry Hall Park, much of the housing is privately built semis. New owners often ask for room-by-room interior decorating across the whole house, before or just after they move in.

Hallways and landings take the heaviest wear and are usually the first areas people want done. Bay windows bring deep reveals and window boards that need filling and careful cutting in. Dated feature walls in bold papers or strong colours are stripped or sealed and brought back to plain emulsion, so each room reads as one.

Front Doors and Timber Windows on Older Houses

For original or replacement timber front doors, timber porches and any timber windows, our service for painting timber front doors and windows covers the prep and the finish. Each one is sanded, filled where needed, primed on bare wood and end grain, and given two finish coats. We’ll help you choose a colour that sits well with the rest of the street.

Kingstanding and Oscott: Rendered Fronts and Full Redecorations

Kingstanding was built largely as a council estate between the wars, and many of its houses are now privately owned. Around Kingstanding Circle and out towards Oscott, plenty of fronts are rendered and painted, and repainting them is a job for our exterior painting for rendered houses, with fascias and soffits usually done at the same time.

A painted front needs redoing every several years, and how long it lasts depends on exposure and the preparation underneath. Our guide to masonry paint, prep and the right weather explains why we spend the time on cleaning and stabilising first.

Inside, a house that has just changed hands usually needs a full redecoration, often starting with several layers of old wallpaper to strip.

New Homes in Perry Barr

Perry Barr has seen a lot of new housing in recent years, much of it part of the regeneration that followed the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The first full redecoration of a new-build follows its own rules.

Fresh plaster takes a mist coat before any colour, and our guide on how to paint new plaster explains why. Shrinkage cracks around door frames and ceilings tend to appear in the first year and are filled before painting, and the builder’s basic emulsion is swapped for a wipeable finish.

What Changes the Price of a Great Barr Decorating Job?

Price here mostly depends on the state of the front render and how easy it is to reach, how many rooms we’re doing at once, how much wallpaper needs stripping, and whether a new-build needs mist coats throughout. We quote after a visit and fix the figure in writing. For more on how costs add up, read about typical painting and decorating prices in Birmingham.

Great Barr Painting Questions

I live in Great Barr - is my house in Birmingham or Sandwell?

The simplest way to tell is the name on your council tax bill. You can also type your postcode into the GOV.UK find your local council service. A postcode on its own won't settle it, because the boundary cuts through B43. We cover addresses where Birmingham City Council is the council. This is just a way to check, not official advice.

Do you cover Kingstanding, Perry Barr and Oscott?

Yes. Perry Barr is in B42, and Kingstanding and Oscott are in B44, all on the Birmingham side. The coverage lists on this page show each area by postcode, and if your street is close to a boundary, call us and we'll check it for you.

Do you work in Hamstead or Pheasey?

No. Hamstead is in Sandwell and Pheasey is in Walsall, and both are outside the area we cover. We only take on work at addresses within Birmingham city, including Sutton Coldfield, so we're not able to quote there.

How often does a rendered front need repainting?

There's no fixed number. An exposed front facing the weather, or one painted over poor preparation, will need doing sooner than a sheltered wall that was cleaned and stabilised properly first. We'll tell you honestly how yours looks at the visit, and our guide to masonry and render painting explains what makes a coating last.

Can you decorate a new-build in Perry Barr?

Yes. New plaster takes a mist coat before colour, shrinkage cracks around frames and ceilings are filled once the house has settled, and the builder's basic paint is replaced with a finish you can wipe. Our guide to painting new plaster covers the details.

Are the painters you send to Great Barr DBS-checked and insured?

Yes on both counts. Every painter is DBS-checked, and the business is insured for its painting and decorating work. You're welcome to ask to see the details when we visit to quote.
